25 July 2018, Belmopan:- On Monday 23rd July, Rangers from the Mayflower Bocawina National Park came across 3 bicycles within the protected area; and after staking out observed that 3 hunters returned for them. The police were called and by the time they arrived the 3 men were intercepted just on the outside perimeter of the National Park. In their possession was 3 Armadillos and 2 Gibnuts. The 3 men from Silk Grass Village were taken to court and were convicted for “Unlawful Possession of Forest Produce” under the Forest Act. They were fined $100.00 each and the produce confiscated.
APAMO takes this opportunity to call on the general public not to purchase game meat from persons who do not have permit to hunt or sell game meat.
Protected Areas are established to conserve the natural landscape and its ecological processes to ensure its biodiversity including wildlife is protected for many years for the benefit of all. Hunting and removal of timber within protected areas are two of the biggest human threats to our protected areas.
