ABOUT THE MAYFLOWER BOCAWINA ENVIRONMENTAL AND DEVELOPMENT GROUP
Mayflower Bocawina National Park is co-managed jointly by the Forest Department and Mayflower Bocawina Environmental Development Group (MBEDG), a Community-based Organization. The present Chairperson is Ms. Roshell Daley and MBEDG’s management team consists of local stakeholders from communities in the Stann Creek District. The management regime is based on protection of ecological processes and promotion of education and research, therefore corresponding to an IUCN Category II protected area.
MBEDG has as its core, a mission to contribute to the preservation and conservation of the natural resources of the Freshwater Creek and North Stann Creek water sheds of Belize through the effective management of MBNP, while providing income generating opportunities for local stakeholders, thereby benefiting present and future generations. MBEDG also provides a wide range of research and recreational programs and tourism related services in the Stann Creek District, while effectively managing and conserving the ecological features of Mayflower Bocawina National Park.
The park has one Park Manager and five Park Rangers diligently working to maintain the park and its trails. The park generates and receives funding from park entrance fees and activities and grants from donor organizations such as Protected Area Conservation Trust (PACT), Belize’s National Conservation Trust Fund (BNCF) and Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP).
